Legislative Update - April 7, 2017

Friday, April 7, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

This has been a busy week at the Capitol with many Omnibus bills being debated on the House Floor. The House took up the Omnibus Legacy, Agriculture, Health and Human Services, State Government and Jobs bills this week, but one of the most concerning and news-making bills debated was the Omnibus Public Safety bill. It included controversial measures regarding increased penalties for protesters.

I rose to speak out in favor of an amendment that would have removed anti-protester provisions from the Public Safety bill, as did many of my colleagues. You can watch the full debate of that amendment here, and hear my remarks specifically by clicking here.

There were several other big events at the Capitol this week:

POCI Caucus ‘Enhance Minnesota’ Package

On Wednesday, the People of Color and Indigenous Caucus held our first press conference to discuss the ‘Enhance Minnesota’ legislative package. This is the first year there has been a POCI Caucus at the Capitol, and I am pleased to be joined by so many other legislators of diverse backgrounds working for positive change this year. We are proud to represent diverse communities that enhance Minnesota’s many strengths. To see information about the legislation we are actively pushing click here, and to read news coverage from our press conference click here.

New Americans Listening Session a Success!

This week between floor sessions a diverse group of legislators, many in the POCI caucus, gathered to provide an opportunity for members of our communities to share their voices on some of the issues facing New Americans. There were a variety of legislators joining the event to learn more about the issues you addressed.

REMINDER: Advocacy Fair – Tomorrow, April 8

In the last few months, I've heard from many constituents asking how they can get involved to work for policy change. In response, Rep. Dave Pinto, Sen Foung Hawj and I have put together an Advocacy Fair, to connect community members with organizations advocating for change in our community and state. I hope you will attend and learn how you can be a part of something bigger than yourself and help bring the change you want to see. The Fair will be held on Saturday, April 8, 1:00pm to 5:00pm, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church (700 Snelling Ave. S.) in St. Paul and will feature more than 20 advocacy organizations. Congresswoman Betty McCollum is also planning to attend, along with other legislators. Click here to see the Facebook event page.
