Capitol Update from Rep. Deb Kiel

Friday, May 10, 2019

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Here is an update with the latest news from St. Paul.

Negotiations

End-of-session negotiations have begun, and so far the DFL has refused to compromise even one cent from their $12 billion in proposed tax hikes, including a 70% gas tax increase and bringing back the “sick tax” on doctor visits, hospital stays, and medical procedures. So far, Senator Gazelka has pushed back on their excessive taxing and spending. It will be pretty quiet here at the Capitol until we have budget targets from leadership, but once we have those numbers our conference committees can buckle down and do our work writing a budget that is beneficial for Minnesotans.

High School Page Program

Audrey Harbott from Crookston was here at the Capitol this week with the High School Page Program! The High School Page Program brings together high school juniors from across the state and facilitates meetings with legislators, allows them to experience the legislative process firsthand by assisting members during session, and puts on a mock committee hearing to teach students leadership and critical thinking. Congratulations to Audrey on being chosen to participate in this program, and I hope you found it to be a valuable experience!

Mother’s Day

I want to with you all a happy Mother’s Day this Sunday! I hope you’re able to celebrate all the mothers in your life. I look forward to spending the day with family and loved ones.

My mother, Marlys Perry, and I

It’s an honor and privilege to work for you at the Capitol. Don’t hesitate to contact my office at any time this session to share your thoughts, concerns or ideas. I am here to serve you!

Sincerely,

Deb
