Capitol Update from Rep. Deb Kiel

Monday, January 11, 2016

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

For folks with upcoming travel plans concerned about REAL ID, I wanted to share with you the latest news from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and assure you that Minnesotans will be able to continue to fly without hindrance.

On Friday, DHS announced that the earliest it will require REAL ID compliant driver's licenses to board a domestic flight is January 22, 2018. States will still be able to receive an extension after that date, with full compliance for travel required starting on October 1, 2020.

To sum that up, folks will not need to worry about REAL ID impacting your travel plans for at least the next two years. Additionally, with the legislature planning to address the issue when we reconvene in March, this will give us ample time to comply with federal law during the regular legislative session.

I hope this clears up any confusion for folks who are planning on flying in the near future. Please contact my office if you have any additional questions or concerns.

If I can ever assist you or your family on a matter of state government, please don’t hesitate to contact my office. I am here to serve you!

Deb
