Legislative Update from Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen

Monday, May 2, 2022

Dear Neighbors,

On Friday, the House approved the supplemental public safety budget bill. Despite the bill's passage, it did receive bipartisan opposition during the final vote.

House Democrats’ public safety bill is a real missed opportunity to do right by Minnesotans and work with law enforcement to keep our communities safe. Instead of holding criminals accountable and funding law enforcement, Democrats are reducing sentences and putting money towards unproven non-profit groups. This bill is opposed by all of Minnesota’s largest law enforcement organizations.

Earlier this year, House Republicans unveiled a package of proposals that would have addressed rising levels of crime across Minnesota. Our bill would enhance criminal penalties for violent crimes, create a new crime for the carjacking epidemic, create incentives to recruit and retain peace officers, and hold prosecutors and the courts responsible for returning violent offenders to the streets.

It’s unfortunate that Democrats refused to join us in our efforts to improve public safety.

Thankfully, many of the Democrats’ worst policies have zero chance of becoming law due to the Senate Republican majority’s opposition.

The Senate Republican’s legislative package has garnered the support of law enforcement groups including the Chiefs of Police Association and the Minnesota Sheriffs Association.

When it comes to keeping our communities safe, it’s clear which party has the best interests of Minnesotans in mind.
