Legislative Update from Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen

Friday, January 22, 2021

Dear Neighbors,

Earlier this week, Speaker Melissa Hortman announced that that an “investigation” into a January 6th rally at the State Capitol has ended without any finding of wrongdoing or criminal activity by participants. I was never contacted regarding the investigation and in the end it appeared to be political theater by Democrats trying to silence constitutionally protected  speech and rally in St Paul. I was at the rally about 30 minutes.

The investigation found that there was zero violence at the event, despite news reports that some guest speakers may have used particularly strong rhetoric that was not necessarily appropriate.

As a reminder, I signed a letter with all 59 members of the Minnesota House Republican Caucus, condemning the violence we saw earlier this month at the U.S. Capitol and any violent rhetoric that may have occurred at the Minnesota State Capitol that same day.

I have been consistent and have condemned the violence this past summer by leftist supporters and condemn any violence at the nation’s capital. Conversely, the Governor and Democrats said very little to condemn the violence this summer and the destruction of property at the state capitol which is the reason we have had a fence around the state capitol since last summer.

Violence of any kind is unacceptable, and we cannot resort to violence to settle our political disagreements. I also encourage everyone to be respectful and civil with one another. We all deserve to be treated with respect.
