Legislative Update from Rep. Mary Franson

Friday, January 18, 2013

Dear neighbor,

The new session of the legislature is well underway. This past week, I’ve been focused on my committee work.

As a member of the Health and Human Services Policy Committee, I am eager to learn the details of how the Affordable Care Act will affect Minnesota. I am already concerned about implementing the health insurance exchange in Minnesota. Implementing and operating the exchange in the state will reportedly cost hard-working Minnesota taxpayers around $54 million dollars. Not only will Minnesotans be paying for that through their taxes, but also through the rising healthcare costs. I will continue to advocate for market-driven healthcare reforms for Minnesota. This is an issue that continues to fascinate my interest and I look forward to the coming hearings on it.

I’m happy to report that Minnesota’s monthly unemployment rate dropped from 5.6% to 5.5% and that 9,100 jobs were added within our state this month. The pro-growth policies that Republican legislators pushed for the past two years have worked and now Minnesotans are benefiting from them. However, too many people are still without work and we need to continue to enact policies that will help Minnesotans find jobs.

As you know, the topic of Second Amendment rights has been in the news recently. I want to assure to you that I will continue to fight for and protect our Second Amendment rights.
