Legislative Update from Rep. Mary Franson

Friday, January 13, 2023

Dear Friends,

This week the House and Senate passed a tax conformity bill to conform Minnesota taxes to federal guidelines. This commonsense change will ensure you don’t pay tax on something you never should have been taxed on in the first.

While I hope we can work together on tax relief this session, that does not seem likely. Keep reading to learn which far-left agenda items the DFL pushed this week:

Driver’s Licenses For All

The Transportation and Judiciary committees heard a bill this week to allow illegal immigrants to obtain a Class D driver’s license. Since the DFL is also pushing for automatic voter registration, this bill had the potential to have an enormous impact on our elections as well.

Thankfully, the DFL accepted a Republican amendment in the Judiciary committee that will require the Secretary of State’s office to receive the licensing and immigration status information in order to keep accurate voter registration records. While I am glad that this commonsense amendment was adopted, this bill still has numerous issues. The Public Safety and Elections Committees should hear this bill so we can ensure it keeps our roads and elections safe. Unfortunately, this bill is heading to the Ways & Means committee next, the final stop before heading to the House floor for a final vote.

Dems Ending Protections for Babies Who Survive Abortions

In a new bill introduced this week, HF 91, Democrats are attempting to repeal the Born Alive Infant Protections Act. This law has been on the books in Minnesota since 2015 to protect abortion survivors. It recognizes the rights of these babies as humans and requires medical care to preserve their lives.

HF 91 shows the extreme lengths the Democrats are going to ignore the rights of the unborn and to give Minnesota some of the most extreme abortion laws in the world. They are moving this bill, along with the PRO Act, to codify a woman’s right to an abortion. The PRO Act puts no guardrails in place so a woman could get an abortion even in her second or third trimester. There are also no requirements for these late-term abortions to be performed in a hospital or for abortion clinics to be licensed.

I will continue fighting to make sure we respect and protect the right to life. These laws the Democrats are pushing are radical and frankly disturbing. We must stand up for our precious unborn and advocate for the health and safety of women.

Hold Onto Your Stove!

This week Biden’s US Consumer Product Safety Commission said that it is considering a ban on gas stoves. The Administration is citing environmental concerns for considering this change.

We do not need the government influencing our kitchen appliances. This is another case of the far left pushing their radical agenda to influence every aspect of our lives. Everyone from home cooks to professional chefs use and love gas stoves. It’s time the government gets out of the kitchen – there are already too many cooks in there.
