Legislative Update from Rep. Mary Franson

Friday, May 27, 2022

Dear Friends,

As we gather with our friends and family for BBQs and celebrations this weekend, let us never forget the sacrifices of the men and women who paid the ultimate price to defend our freedoms. Make sure to say a prayer for our fallen heroes and Gold Star families. Our community is recognizing Memorial Day with a wide variety of events. More information, including details on the Alexandria parade, can be found here.

Unvaccinated State Employees No Longer Required to Test

Effective this week state employees who chose not to receive a COVID vaccine will no longer be required to submit to weekly testing! This is a step in the right direction for health freedom, but never forget that it should have never been in place.

Liquor Bill Signed Into Law

This session we made significant changes to Minnesota’s liquor laws. I am pleased that my amendment to allow the City of Alexandria to issue an on-sale beer and wine license for liquor sales at junior hockey games at the Runestone Civic Center was included in the final bill. Other changes include the popular “free the growler” and municipalities will now be able to issue an on-sale wine and beer license for townball games.

House Dems Hold Minnesotans’ Priorities Hostage

The legislative session ended on Sunday with House Democrats holding tax relief hostage in exchange for billions in new spending. At a time when we are facing a recession, it would be irresponsible to spend more when we should be putting Minnesotans’ hard-earned money back in their pockets. Higher gas, grocery, and energy bills are not going away quickly under the Biden/Walz economy. I look forward to working with my Republican colleagues next session to deliver historic tax cuts for all Minnesotans.

House Democrats also refused to do anything to address public safety. Crime is on the rise across our state. Instead of making sure we fully funded law enforcement and hold criminals accountable, Democrats blocked funding and increasing penalties. The “defund the police” wing of their party is dangerously loud and prevented any public safety deals from taking place.

Next session, Republicans will not ignore the priorities of Minnesotans. House Republicans will deliver massive tax cuts, fully fund law enforcement, and hold criminals accountable. Even though the legislative session has ended, I still want to hear from you. Make sure to share with me your ideas and priorities. It’s an honor to represent the best!
