Cold Weather Rule Reminder from Rep. Franson

Tuesday, September 10, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

As temperatures drop and we get further into fall, I just wanted to take a moment and remind everyone about the Minnesota Cold Weather Rule. The Cold Weather Rule protects residential customers who are having trouble paying their heating bill from having their service disconnected from October 15th through April 15th. It does not completely stop winter disconnections, but it does provide additional protection for those who need it.

If you are having trouble paying your winter bills, you can contact your electric or gas company to sign up for a Cold Weather Rule payment plan. Before your service can be disconnected, your electric or natural gas company must provide a notice of disconnection, payment plan options, and information on your appeal rights, among other things.

If you have additional questions about the Cold Weather Rule, you can visit the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission’s website here: https://mn.gov/puc/consumers/help/shut-off-protection/.

If you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding any issue related to state government, please feel free to contact me at either 651-296-3201 or rep.mary.franson@house.mn. I would love to hear from you.

It’s an honor to represent the best!
