Capitol Update from Rep. Dan Fabian

Friday, May 17, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

Here is the latest news from the Capitol!

Budget Negotiations

Leadership in the House and Senate, along with the Governor, are still meeting to decide on budget targets. Governor Walz and the Democrats in the House have proposed an astronomical $12 billion increase in taxes, whereas the Senate proposed a balanced budget using existing funds.

The question is not how much to raise taxes – the question should be, when we have over a billion dollar budget surplus, whether it makes sense to raise taxes on Minnesotans at all. As I’ve talked to the people of our area and across the state, Minnesotans do not want or need an extra $12 billion in taxes. As Republicans proved last biennium, it is possible to fund the state’s budget with the funds currently available. I will be voting NO on tax increases.

Peace Officers Memorial Day

Wednesday was Peace Officers Memorial Day, and I was honored to attend the ceremony honoring our fallen officers.

Capitol Visitors

Two 6th grade groups from Grygla and Marshall County Central visited the Capitol this week. I always enjoy visiting with school groups from our area!
