Capitol Update from Rep. Dan Fabian

Friday, March 8, 2019

Dear Neighbor,

The universal background check bill and the red flag bill had another hearing this week – below is a video of a North Minneapolis Reverend Tim Christopher, who testified against the gun bills. I’d encourage you to watch the video and hear from him why HF 8 and HF 9 will do nothing to keep his community safe. I will be voting no on both of these bills.

Testimony from Reverend Tim Christopher on DFL gun control bills

On Monday, the House unanimously passed a bill, HF 232, which provides $100,000 in the current fiscal year for mental health counseling for farm families and businesses, as well as the Farm Advocates program. The farm economy is causing a lot of stress for farmers and their families right now, and I know this additional money for mental health counseling will be put to good use. I strongly support this bill, and I hope to see it pass the Senate and get signed into law as soon as possible.

Next Tuesday, the Energy and Climate Division will be hearing the Walz-Flanagan administration’s clean energy bill (HF 1956). The bill mandates that 100 percent of the state’s electricity be produced from “clean” sources by 2050, specifically excluding nuclear power. This bill would increase electricity prices for Minnesota consumers, at a time when we already have above-average electricity prices. It will also decrease the reliability of the regional electrical grid during times of extreme cold or hot weather. I strongly oppose this bill.

HF 826, a resolution urging the President to designate a state funeral to honor the last World War II Medal of Honor recipient, has passed the Veterans Affairs Committee and is awaiting a hearing on the House Floor. There are only four living World War II Medal of Honor recipients left, and having a state funeral for the last surviving recipient would be the perfect way to honor all of the 353 World War II Medal of Honor recipients, as well as the more than 16 million members of the Armed Forces during World War II. I am a coauthor on this great bill and I look forward to voting for it.

I always love meeting with constituents when I’m in St. Paul – here are some photos of some of the groups who came to visit this week!
