Legislative Update

Friday, February 1, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

The cold weather this week couldn't slow down some truly terrible ideas from our Democrat friends. They began the session by calling reinstating a 2% tax on all medical procedures essential, a proposal we have made sure Minnesotans know is an unnecessary tax on those who are sick, pregnant, or need to have an X-ray performed. They also have done their very best to hide these proposals behind a three-card-monte committee process that makes it hard for members and staff to follow, much less the public.

Other bills promising higher taxes and taking away Minnesotan's Second Amendment rights have also been proposed by the new Democrat Majority. We will continue to fight against these bad ideas and instead put forth ideas that will move Minnesota in a better direction.

Fire Service Day on the Hill

This week, it was great to meet with Isanti County Firefighters at the Capitol for Fire Service Day on the Hill and thank them for all the work they do to keep us safe. I always appreciate being able to visit with constituent groups that are able to come to the Capitol—if you are planning to visit St. Paul, please contact my office.

Standing Up for Life

Tuesday, January 22 marked the 46th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision by the United States Supreme Court. On Tuesday, thousands of pro-life supporters from across the state took part in a march at the State Capitol to show their support for the unborn. I was proud to join them and many of my constituents who also braved the cold weather to stand for life.

The purpose of the march, which is organized by Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL) is to commemorate the lives lost to abortion and to call for renewed respect and protection for all members of the human family, including unborn children and their mothers. I had the chance to speak at the rally and thank the thousands of pro-life supporters for their advocacy and for standing with the unborn. You can watch the video by clicking the video below.

And then this week, House and Senate Republicans held a joint press conference to express our opposition to a bill New York recently passed allowing abortion up to the moment of birth with virtually no restrictions. Virginia is considering following suit. As a strong defender of the unborn, I cannot believe what is happening in these states. We will fight to make sure these barbaric practices are not brought to Minnesota.

Hwy 47 Meeting

This week I joined a great group of community leaders and law enforcement for a meeting in St Francis to discuss ways we can work to increase safety on MN Hwy 47. Keeping our kids safe is everyone’s number one priority and I am encouraged by the discussion. I am confident we will make progress on improving the safety of Hwy 47 this year!
