HOUSE REPUBLICANS ELECT SPEAKER-DESIGNATE, MAJORITY LEADER

Friday, November 11, 2016
St. Paul- House Republicans announced Friday the unanimous reelection of Rep. Kurt Daudt (Crown) as Speaker-designate and Rep. Joyce Peppin (Rogers) as Majority Leader. Caucus members met Friday morning after earning a historic victory earlier this week, securing 76 seats in the Minnesota House of Representatives.

“I’m proud to have earned the unanimous support from my peers for Speaker of the House. This year, Governor Dayton campaigned vigorously for single-party DFL control for his remaining two years in office and voters instead chose commonsense and compromise. We will do everything in our power to respect the clear direction Minnesotans have given us,” said Speaker-designate Daudt.

As a result of Republican victories in open seats and currently held DFL seats, 12 new members will be sworn-in as part of the House Republican Majority caucus in January. The new additions bring a wealth of experience in healthcare, job creation, education and workforce development, and local government.

“I’m honored to continue serving as Majority Leader in the 2017-18 Legislative Session. Our state faces unique challenges and I’m thrilled to lead members with diverse backgrounds as we tackle those issues together,” said Majority Leader Peppin.

The upcoming session will be the first in more than a decade led by a House Republican Majority following a presidential election and it is the largest House Republican Majority following a presidential election since Minnesota began partisan elections in 1974. In addition, 48 women will be sworn-in this January, the largest number ever in the Minnesota House.
