STATEMENT FROM SPEAKER DAUDT ON REAL ID

Friday, January 8, 2016

St. Paul- Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh C. Johnson announced Friday two important dates in regards to the final phase of REAL ID enforcement which addresses enforcement by TSA at airports. According to the press release issued by the Department of Homeland Security, Minnesotans have at least two years (January 22, 2018) before they will need to show an alternative form of acceptable identification for domestic air travel to board their flight. If Minnesota earns an extension after showing progress on REAL ID compliance this legislative session, residents will have until October 1, 2020.

“We are encouraged by the news from the Department of Homeland Security that we will have more than two years to earn an extension and more than four and half years to bring Minnesota into full compliance with REAL ID,” said Speaker Kurt Daudt (R-Crown). “House Republicans remain committed to finding a resolution as soon as possible, but Minnesota residents can travel using their licenses for the foreseeable future without any fear of being turned away.”
