Legislative Update (February 23, 2018)

Friday, February 23, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

You’ve probably already heard, but the US Women’s Olympic hockey team beat Canada in a thrilling shootout to win the Gold Medal! A major reason for Team USA’s success was goalie Maddie Rooney. I’m proud to say Maddie is a 2015 graduate of Andover High School!

Maddie made some amazing saves in the tournament, and came up big when it mattered most, stopping four of Canada’s six shootout attempts. On behalf of all Andover residents, Minnesotans, and Americans alike, I’d like to congratulate Maddie and the rest of Team USA on their historic Gold Medal! Yesterday, I spoke on the House floor to honor Maddie and the rest of Team USA; you can see the video here.

Legislative Session Begins

Tuesday marked the start of the 2018 legislative session. Things are moving at a quick pace as we have lots to accomplish and just 12 weeks to do it.

One of the first things we did was engaged in sexual harassment training. All 134 members of the House of Representatives took part in training to ensure the Capitol is a safe and welcoming place to work and visit. This is a very serious issue, and one we aren’t taking lightly.

Just yesterday, we held the first hearing of the year for my committee, Civil Law and Data Practices. We heard two new bills, and should hear more in the near future. If you want to see what’s on the agenda for our meetings, you can click here.

Tax Conformity

One of the major issues facing the legislature this session is conforming to the new federal tax law. The bill passed by Congress is already providing relief for people across the country; returning tax dollars to hardworking Americans was long overdue. The new changes mean we have to update our state’s tax code to conform with the federal law. This is extremely complicated, but an important step in ensuring Minnesotans can easily file their taxes in 2019.
