Legislative Update (February 16, 2018)

Friday, February 16, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

I wanted to make sure I got in touch one last time before we start the legislative session on Tuesday. It’s a shorter session this year, so things will be moving quickly and I’ll be sure to keep you updated. If you’re going to be in St. Paul in the coming weeks, please schedule a time to visit!

Upcoming Issue

One of the major topics we’ll look to address this session is conforming to the new federal tax code. This is a complicated process, but one we must do in order to ensure Minnesotans are receiving the intended tax relief. Though I don’t sit on the Taxes Committee, this is one issue I’ll continue to monitor as it progresses during session.

Farmstead Visit

Yesterday, I met a large group of residents at the Farmstead in Andover, as well as several staff members. The residents were very engaged in what is happening in our community and nation. My conversation with staff centered on addressing the long-term needs of their residents and outreach into the community so that the word gets out about the good that goes on in their facility. We also talked about elderly waivers and financial exploitation of elders.

Manufacturing Signing Day

I also attended the Second Annual Anoka Tech Manufacturing Career Intent Signing Day. This was set up similar to signing day for high school athletes who have been recruited to play a sport for a college or university. It was great to see the local Chamber of Commerce, particularly their manufacturer members, partner with Anoka Tech to get more young people interested in manufacturing jobs. Approximately 19% of available jobs in Anoka County right now are in manufacturing. Another statistic that was shared: Average annual earnings of an employee in the manufacturing sector is $79,000.

Upcoming Events

Saturday, February 24 is the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics in Coon Rapids. The event at Crooked Lake raises money for Special Olympics in our state. You can find more details here. I hope we get some warm weather for that day!

On March 1, I’m planning to attend a World Thinking Day Celebration put on by the Northwood’s Girl Scout Service Unit. This event is from 6:30-8:00pm at Andover Elementary. I’m joining other female elected officials to talk about serving our communities. I hope to see you there!

Just around the corner is a big event for our area. The 20th Annual North Suburban Home Improvement Show will be held at the Andover YMCA Community Center on Saturday, March 10th. This is a great event held right here in Andover. For more information, you can visit the show website here.

Please Contact Me

It’s important for me to hear your opinions and ideas as we’re discussing various topics during session. Please feel free to call or email my office and I’ll get back to you.
