Bill on floor to fix tax problems

Friday, March 21, 2014

Dear Neighbor,

We’ve received quite a bit of positive feedback on a video segment the Big 10 Network shot at my farm last a while back to highlight advances in agricultural technology. The spot has aired from time to time over the last few months. Here is the link to the news release and video clip: http://www1.umn.edu/news/news-releases/2014/UR_CONTENT_469263.html

At the Capitol this week, I continue working on helping obtain funding for the Eagles Healing Nest home for veterans. This Sauk Centre facility houses more than 40 veterans and the people involved do a fantastic job on a limited budget, but volunteer efforts only go so far and they really need financial support. The House passed this legislation earlier this session, but it stalled recently when a taxpayer commitment to a $90 million Senate office facility in the bill led to some political football. That was very disappointing to see that controversy delay final passage of this bill.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue indicates there are three scenarios for people who already filed their taxes but would like to capitalize on deductions that become available pending Gov. Mark Dayton’s signature. They are:

1.      The Revenue Dept. will fix returns for citizens and send a letter to them outlining the updates they made.

2.      Revenue will ask citizens to provide more information so the department can fix returns.

3.      Revenue will notify citizens their returns cannot be fixed and amended versions will need to be filed.

I’ll pass along any more information that becomes available on this subject.

Sincerely,

Paul
