Unemployment update and new laws

Monday, December 23, 2013

Dear Neighbor,

Faith and I wish you and your family a merry Christmas and happy new year. Here are just a few items as we prepare for the 2014 session to begin the end of February:

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DROPS

The newest state report shows our unemployment rate is down to a seasonally adjusted 4.6 percent. There certainly are questions over that number’s accuracy because a certain percentage of citizens are “hidden” from studies, but this study indicates our state has gained 39,800 jobs over the last year. That is good news as we work to fully recover from the Great Recession. I will be working to do even more to lift our economy by improving our jobs climate during the 2014 legislative session.

NEW LAWS

The new year means new laws are in effect as of Jan. 1. Some notable changes include: Increased surveillance is needed at scrap yards, expanded Medical Assistance coverage will arrive and a radon disclosure requirement are some of the topics covered by new laws that take effect with the start of 2014. I have worked closely with the radon issue following the death of a local friend and this is a step in the right direction. Complete information on selected new laws can be found here. A complete summary of all laws passed by the 2013 Legislature is available here.

We will pick up steam on preparing for the 2014 session after the holidays and I will pass along more information as things develop. Until then, please be safe this holiday season and enjoy spending extra time with friends and loved ones.

Sincerely,

Paul
