Rally at Capitol; Gov issues budget plan

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

Dear Neighbor,

A crowd estimated at around 2,000 braved bitterly cold conditions yesterday to mark the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion in the United States. A contingent of around 50 folks from Stearns and neighboring counties was among that total.

After listening to several speeches and singing "God Bless America" the group dispersed, and the Stearns County delegation came into the Capitol for a meeting with myself, along with Sens. Torrey Westrom and Michelle Fischbach. We had a good conversation and discussed the issues pertaining to abortion.

The governor’s budget was also released yesterday, and it called for increased spending along with increased taxes in Minnesota. A new fourth-tier income tax for single filers making more than $150,000, and for joint filers making more than $250,000.

Total spending in the state under Dayton’s plan for the next two years would be just under $38 billion, an increase of approximately $2.5 billion from the current biennium.

I’ll have more details of the governor’s proposal in the next few days.

Sincerely,

Paul
