Livestock grants available

Tuesday, September 15, 2015

Dear Neighbor,

I hope all is well as we make our way into the thick of the harvest. This has been an exceptional growing season, so it will be interesting to see how things turn out when the hay is in the barn, so to speak.

Applications are now being accepted for livestock investment grants in Minnesota. The deadline is Dec. 18, so there still will be a chance to apply after the crops are up if you don't have the time to do it now.

The grants are available to Minnesota livestock farmers for expenses incurred between Aug. 1, 2015 and June 30, 2017. Producers can be reimbursed 10 percent of the first 500,000 of investment in their operation, with a minimum $4,000 investment. This applies to expenses related to the purchase, construction or improvement of livestock buildings or facilities, the purchase of fencing, as well as feeding or waste management equipment. You also may apply if you suffered a loss due to natural disasters or unintended consequences.

This program has been in place since the Legislature first funded it in 2008. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture reports 468 grant recipients have invested an estimated $150 million in improvements since then.

You can click here for more details about the grants, including an FAQ section and application forms.

Good luck!

Sincerely,

Paul
