Bird exhibitions canceled amid avian flu outbreak

Friday, May 15, 2015

Dear Neighbor,

Just a quick note as we continue working on budget matters at the Capitol:

The Minnesota Board of Animal Health today announced all bird exhibitions at county fairs, the State Fair and other gatherings of birds will be canceled for the 2015 season in response to the outbreak of avian influenza.

This is a big step, and kids who show birds in 4-H are likely to be disappointed, but this seems to be a good decision in attempting to contain the spread of this disease. Around 90 farms in Minnesota already have been impacted and it is important to prevent further devastation.

Visit www.mnairesponse.info for more information on Minnesota’s response to avian influenza. I will pass along any news regarding funding to help combat the disease that may be included in the Legislature's final budget package.

Sincerely,

Paul
