Legislative Update from Rep. Bob Dettmer

Friday, January 23, 2015

Dear Friends and Neighbors

Here is an update from the Capitol.

House File 136 Hearing in Taxes

This week, the House Taxes Committee held a hearing for my bill HF 136 which, if signed into law, will have a positive impact on small business owners across Minnesota.

For companies that travel to sell goods in multiple parts of Minnesota, the business must take the time to figure out the sales tax rate for each city, a task which can often be complicated for businesses trying to comply with state and local law. This bill would require the Department of Revenue to refund what businesses paid to calculate this array of sales tax rates and also require them to create an address-based sales tax calculator to use online.

Additionally, the House Tax Committee Chair introduced a similar bill to HF 136, and I know we’ll be able to work together to craft legislation that makes it easier to do business in the state of Minnesota.

Tax Relief for Minnesotans

Last week, House Republicans fast tracked HF 6, a bill that conforms Minnesota’s tax code to the federal tax code, ensuring every citizen receives their largest possible refund without having to file an amended return.

Unlike last year, when a similar federal conformity bill got bogged down in politics and didn’t pass until March, this session it was moved quickly to give $20 million in tax relief to families, homeowners, teachers and college students.

The bill passed in the Senate this week and will go to Governor Dayton for signature.

March for Life Rally

It was great to see so many people come down to the Capitol in support of on Thursday! Thank you to all the constituents who met with me to discuss this important issue.

If you have any ideas for legislation or input on what’s happening at the Capitol, I welcome you to contact me this session. I am here to serve you!

As always, thank you for the honor and privilege of being your state representative.

Sincerely,

Bob
