Remembering Those Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice this Memorial Day

Friday, May 23, 2014

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This Monday, May 26th is Memorial Day—a time when we remember those brave men and women who gave their life in service to our country.

Memorial Day was borne out of our American Civil War, with both the North and South looking for a way to remember the hundreds of thousands of Union and Confederate soldiers who lost their lives. Since then, the holiday has developed into a national day of remembrance for our country’s heroes.

Too many people celebrate this holiday as a day off of work without remembering its true purpose. Over one million Americans have given their lives in service of country since the American Revolution, and we should all take a solemn moment on Monday to pay tribute to those brave souls.

I have two wonderful sons who both serve in the military. I know how thankful I am for their safety, and my heart breaks for the parents who do not see their son or daughter return home. To all the parents, siblings, family and friends who have lost someone they love in military service—my thoughts and prayers are with you.

When veterans choose to enlist, they know that deployment could mean the ultimate sacrifice. Yet, they still choose to defend democracy and freedom around the world, protecting our nation, its people and our way of life.

Please take a moment this holiday weekend to remember the true spirit of Memorial Day, giving  thanks for the veterans in your life and remembering those veterans who are no longer with us.

As always, thank you for the honor and privilege of being your state representative.

Sincerely,

Bob
