As a former educator for 34 years, I know how important it is that schools prepare students for the future. Having the resources and facilities to educate our children is vital, and District 831 is asking voters to approve a referendum to fund infrastructure needs in the Forest Lake School District.
The plan and bond request will be brought to the voters on May 20th, and whether or not you support this initiative, I would encourage you to get out and vote. I am hopeful residents will support this proposal.
It’s important to note that bonds requested will be used solely for maintaining and improving existing school facilities—many of which are between 40 and 50 years old. With these improvements, students will be able to learn in safe, up-to-date classrooms for generations to come.
I have met with Forest Lake Area School District stakeholders and believe they have created a reasonable plan to upgrade and maintain school buildings, saving taxpayers millions in the long-term. More than 16 years have passed since voters approved bonds for building upgrades and repairs, and the time is right to make these necessary improvements.
Planned fixes include roofing, heating and ventilation systems, and boilers in most buildings. Additionally, Southwest and Century Junior Highs will be merged, and Forest Lake High School will be expanded to accommodate grades 9-12.
Please get out and vote on May 20th. I am hopeful voters will pass this referendum because I believe it will offer an educational and economic benefit to the community for years to come.
