RELEASE: House approves historic tax cut for veterans

Monday, May 23, 2016

St. Paul, MN- The Minnesota House passed a supplemental budget bill that included a provision exempting military retirement pay from state income tax. This provision was supported and championed by Rep. Dettmer (R-Forest Lake), Chair of the Veterans Affairs Committee in the Minnesota House.

Currently, Minnesota is one of only a handful of states that fully tax retired military veterans’ retirement pay. Rep. Dettmer, Chair of the Veterans Affairs Committee in the Minnesota House, hopes that this provision will encourage more veterans to remain in Minnesota after they retire.

There are close to 18,000 veterans living in Minnesota who will see their military pensions exempted from state income tax.

"We have been trying to pass this measure for almost two decades," said Dettmer. "This has been a top priority for Minnesota's veteran community for many years, and it is high time that we join the vast majority of other states in making veterans' retirement benefits tax-free. I am so please that this bill was included in the final supplemental budget proposal."

The supplemental budget bill now heads to Governor Dayton’s desk for his signature.
