RELEASE: Rep. Bob Dettmer statement on House passage of REAL ID bill

Tuesday, May 17, 2016

Saint Paul- Following the Minnesota House of Representatives floor session on May 17th, Rep. Bob Dettmer (R- Forest Lake) issued the following statement on REAL ID:

"The REAL ID debate has being going on for years, and I'm pleased to say that the House of Representatives has passed a bill that will resolve this issue," said Rep. Bob Dettmer. "The measure, which passed with bi-partisan support, will issue federally-compliant REAL IDs to people wanting to board an airplane or enter a federal facility. It also gives those with privacy concerns the option to choose a standard driver's license that does not adhere to federal standards."

"Federal REAL ID standards were put in place to make it harder for terrorists to acquire fake IDs and carry out attacks aboard domestic aircrafts and on military bases," said Dettmer. "While the new REAL IDs won't require any additional personal information than our existing licenses, I understand some people's concerns about data privacy. I think our bill in the House does a good job of addressing both sides of this issue, and I'm happy we could get this passed with bipartisan support."
