Legislative Update from Rep. Bob Dettmer

Friday, July 31, 2015

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

On Wednesday, the Veterans' Affairs Division held an informational hearing on the safety of Minnesota's National Guard at recruiting facilities. After recent tragic events in Chattanooga, where several National Guard members were killed, we wanted to hear directly from state leaders and members of the Minnesota Department of Military Affairs about safety protocols and possible legislative action needed in our state.

Testifiers included Major General Richard Nash, the Adjutant General for the Minnesota National Guard. He shared that they are already looking into additional protocols to protect our servicemen and women at recruiting stations around the state. Several other states, including Wisconsin, have taken steps to beef up security measures at recruiting centers and ordered members of the National Guard to be armed. No action like that has been taken in Minnesota.

Our military do so much to protect our freedoms and way of life. We want to ensure that they have the resources they need to protect themselves. Furthermore, hearing from them first-hand about what they think will and won't work in Minnesota was especially important as this issue has gained national attention over the past several weeks.

As always, thank you for the honor and privilege of being your state representative. If I can ever be of assistance to you or your family on a matter of state government, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Bob
