Rep. Winkler Statement: Republicans are prioritizing corporate special interests at the expense of middle class Minnesotans

Thursday, January 8, 2015

ST. PAUL – Today, House Republicans unveiled their first five priorities for the legislative session. Rep. Ryan Winkler (DFL-Golden Valley) released the following statement:

“Unfortunately I am not surprised that the House Republicans have unveiled their first priority to be a tax giveaway to corporate special interests. Republicans have been supporting tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations at the expense of middle class Minnesotans for years and it looks like we’re going to see more of the same from them now that they are in the majority in the House.

“The newly released Republican agenda includes nothing to help Minnesota families. We have all heard the line from them before, and we heard it again today—cutting big business taxes will put more money in our pockets. This is false—businesses will hire workers when they need workers, not because they have extra money laying around.

“It is no surprise that Republicans are siding with big money corporations considering they won the 2014 election with millions in donations from corporations and secret donors. We need real campaign finance reform in Minnesota so that big business cannot buy the political agenda from the middle class.

“Minnesota has an unemployment rate of 3.7% and one of the strongest economies in the country. Giving businesses more money at the expense of middle class families is not the way to keep our economy growing and help working Minnesotans get ahead.”
