Statement from Rep. Ryan Winkler on the elimination of early learning scholarship cap

Thursday, May 15, 2014

Last year, the Legislature provided $40 million for early learning scholarships for low income families across the state. The scholarships were meant to address the achievement gap among Minnesota students help working mothers and parents by offering increased flexibility to pursue professional careers. The Conference Committee discussing this year’s supplemental budget recently agreed to eliminate that cap on those scholarships in 2016 and boost funding by $4.6 million.

Rep. Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley), author of several bills that would eliminate the cap and increase funding for early learning scholarships, issued the following statement:

“Eliminating the cap on early learning scholarships will mean at least a 1,000 more Minnesota kids will get scholarships for high quality early education. And 1,000 Minnesota families will see their economic security improve because kids will have a high quality learning and development environment while their parents work. This is a good first step toward providing high quality early education for every child in Minnesota.”
