Select Committee on Living Wage Jobs Holds Hearing on
Workers Who Make Holidays Happen
ST. PAUL, MN – The Select Committee on Living Wage Jobs will return to St Paul on Thursday, December 19 to hear testimony on how temporary and contract jobs impact Minnesota’s workers. The holiday season isn’t always the most wonderful time of the year for workers who end up in low quality jobs with irregular hours and low wages.
Representative Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley), who chairs the committee, looks forward to hearing testimony from workers, businesses, and economists who can offer their perspective on the new challenges that workers face.
“Minnesota, like many other places around the country, sees a big uptick in business during the holiday season,” said Winkler. “These temporary jobs are low quality. Today, more and more workers are stuck in temporary and contract jobs, especially women and minorities. Our committee is here to examine the growth of temporary jobs, and what Minnesota can do to improve job security. ”
Among the testifiers at the hearing will be Steve Hine, Director of Labor Market Information at the Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), and Jessica Webster, Staff Attorney with the Legal Services Advocacy Project, whose work helps address disparities in the contribution to unemployment insurance by certain types of employers.
Area workers are encouraged to attend the meeting and share their ideas. If you would like to testify, please contact the committee administrator, Matthew Bergeron at 651-296-5413 or at matthew.bergeron@house.mn.
