Legislative Update - April 20, 2018

Friday, April 20, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

We have less than four full weeks left in the 2018 legislative session, and our third bill deadline for passing omnibus bills out of finance committees was last Friday at midnight. Soon we’ll be spending less time in committee as we debate these large bills on the House floor. Here are some updates from the Capitol:

Moms Demand Action Day

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America held a rally last Wednesday to show there is strong support to pass common sense gun laws in Minnesota. In fact, a recent poll shows that 89% of gun owners favor background checks for all gun purchases.

I’m committed to delivering on common sense gun safety measures that will make our families and communities safer. There’s still time to act before session ends.

PSA’s

Over the last couple weeks, more than 300 law enforcement agencies around the state have cracked down on distracted driving. Distracted driving is a factor in one out of five incidents on Minnesota roads and is commonly a result of looking at phones. I recorded this public service announcement as a reminder to stay safe when you’re behind the wheel.

High School Page

A couple weeks ago, a student from ------- High School spent a week at the Capitol as a page. Elizabeth had hands-on access to our state government in action. This is a wonderful program that highlights many different parts of the legislative process and I would encourage anybody who is interested to read about it by clicking here.

Minnesota Values Project

Finally, a step back: In the months leading up to this year’s legislative session, my House DFL colleagues and I spoke to Minnesotans all over the state about our future. Based on those conversations, we’ve put forward the Minnesota Values Project — our goals, principles, and commitments to the people of Minnesota. Our shared values bring us together and can serve as a guide for how we move forward to Learn more and add your voice at www.minnesotavaluesproject.com.

Please feel free to reach out to me at the Capitol if I can be of any assistance.

Sincerely,

Sandra Masin

State Representative
