Our second week in the 2018 legislative session is nearly complete, and it’s been filled with constituent, advocate, and committee meetings.

Budget Surplus
On Wednesday, Minnesota Management and Budget released its February forecast, projecting a $329 million surplus for the 2018-2019 biennium. Congressional action to reauthorize the children’s health insurance program (CHIP) contributed to swinging the projection from a deficit last November to a modest surplus this month.
Minnesota in the News
According to a KMSP report, the overall high school graduation rate in Minnesota reached a record high of nearly 83 percent.
Minnesota moved up a spot in U.S. News and World Report’s ranking of the best states in the nation. Two of the main reasons for our high ranking were “quality of life” and greater opportunities.
National School Breakfast Week
Every child deserves an opportunity for a quality education. School breakfast programs improve the success of students who participate. Next week, the School Nutrition Association is encouraging parents, students, and school officials to come together and enjoy school breakfast. The weeklong program helps raise awareness for school breakfast programs in our local community.
Constituent Meetings
This week, I met with a variety of advocates from my community, including a physical therapist, occupational therapy students, and firefighters from my district. Hearing their input on the issues affecting them in their work and their lives is so valuable to me, and I encourage you to share yours as well.
