Legislative Update: Budget negotiations underway (May 4, 2017)

Thursday, May 4, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

The session deadline is May 22, and many key pieces of legislation are still unresolved. Despite a $1.65 billion surplus, Republican majorities in the House and Senate are choosing to underfund schools and transportation and make deep cuts to health and human services.

Gov. Dayton has been engaged with Republicans, providing specific parameters for his budget preferences and detailing clearly what is unacceptable. A letter sent to the press on Tuesday shows all correspondence between Gov. Dayton’s staff and legislators. House Democrats are willing to compromise, but policies that hurt our state and our neighbors will not be tolerated.

The huge majority of our home health care workers will not receive any raise under the Republican health and human services legislation. This underpaid, overworked group cares for the most vulnerable Minnesotans and it’s abhorrent to see Republicans refuse to take any action in keeping the industry from collapsing when it’s our family members and neighbors who currently receive care who will pay the highest price.

I encourage you to contact Speaker Daudt (651-296-5364) and Gov. Dayton (651-201-3400) to express your concerns or voice your support at this crucial time.

Zoo Day at the Capitol

On a lighter note, April 18th was Zoo Day at the Capitol!

The Minnesota Zoo provides entertaining, educational opportunities for Minnesotans of all ages. Our Zoo is a wonderful resource in our state and it deserves our support.

As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Sandra Masin

State Representative
