Legislative Update: Republican bonding bill still missing (April 26, 2017)

Wednesday, April 26, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

Conference committees are continuing to negotiate differences between the House and Senate omnibus bills passed in the last few weeks. To come to an agreement, the Republican leadership in both bodies needs to first agree on budget targets, which they have yet to do.

If that happens, the legislative leaders can then negotiate with Gov. Dayton and hopefully come out of conference committee with bills Gov. Dayton can sign that will positively impact Minnesotans around the state.

Republican bonding bill still missing

On Tuesday, House DFL members held a press conference calling on House Republicans to release their bonding bill. Last year, we didn’t see a bonding bill from the majority until the final hours of session.

This year, the Senate and Gov. Dayton have both released bonding bills, but we have yet to see anything from House Republicans. I would hope that they learned the lesson from last year that attempting to coerce votes for a bill by keeping anyone from seeing it until shortly before the Legislature was required to adjourn is not the right way to govern.

It has been several years since a large bonding bill was passed and, as interest rates rise, the cost of these projects do too.

Clean Energy Business Day at the Capitol

Clean energy businesses and advocates were at the Capitol on Tuesday, lobbying to protect the industry from House Republican plans to roll back Minnesota’s progress in building a strong, clean energy economy.

Employees of clean energy businesses, on average, make $71,000; 42 percent higher than the state average. It’s a growing field with opportunities around the state and country and it deserves our support.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at the Capitol.

Sincerely,

Sandra Masin

State Representative
