Legislative Update: REAL ID deadline (February 3, 2017)

Thursday, February 2, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

After dealing with premium relief last week, our attention at the Capitol is turning to the next order of business that also has a deadline.

REAL ID

REAL ID has received a lot of attention in the media recently. The current deadline for Minnesota to implement REAL ID is January 2018. If we haven’t resolved this issue by then, our driver’s licenses may no longer let us board airplanes or enter federal buildings and military bases.

This is obviously a high priority.

Passing legislation on this should be fairly simple, but House Republicans have attached unnecessary language regarding undocumented immigrants which is slowing down the process. A bipartisan bill supported by Senate Republicans does not contain that language.

I’m hoping we can put party politics aside and get this resolved so there are no interruptions to Minnesotans’ lives in 2018.

Special Enrollment Period

I wrote about the health insurance premium relief in my last email update, but I wanted to let you all know that as a result of that legislation, MNsure has announced an additional weeklong special enrollment period.

The premium relief legislation will provide a 25 percent instant rebate to those purchasing health insurance on the individual market who don’t already qualify for MNsure tax credits.

The new deadline is Wednesday, February 8th. It’s open to all Minnesotans; however, they must purchase health insurance through MNsure or directly through Blue Plus or Health Partners. For more information, visit the MNsure web page.

Missing Money

The State of Minnesota holds and protects unclaimed monies until the rightful owner is found. Currently, Minnesota is holding around $500 million in unclaimed property.

Check to see if any of your unclaimed property is being held at the Minnesota Department of Commerce’s Missing Money page.

Happy hunting!

Sincerely,

Sandra Masin

State Representative
