Legislative Update - July 13, 2016

Wednesday, July 13, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you enjoyed your Independence Day holiday with family and friends. It was wonderful to visit with many of you at the Eagan Fun Fest. I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on some of my activities.

Coffee Chat

This coming Saturday, July 16, I invite you to a conversation over coffee at Junior’s Sports Café in Burnsville. As you may know, since the regular session adjourned in May, discussions between the Governor and legislative leaders have been ongoing regarding a special session to wrap up some of the unfinished business. I hope to answer any questions you may have about this, or other issues important to you.

What: Coffee Chat

Who: Rep. Sandy Masin

When: Saturday, July 16 from 10:00 a.m. – noon.

Where: Junior’s Sports Café, 1996 Highway 13 E (Town and Country Square), Burnsville

State Revenues

On June 30, Fiscal Year 2016 wrapped up and earlier this week updated state budget information was released. Minnesota Management and Budget had good news to share as FY 16 revenues were $230 million above their forecasted amount back in February. MMB noted that economic growth overall has weakened since the February Budget Forecast. However, economic growth, while weak in the first quarter of calendar year 2106, appears to have rebounded in the second quarter.

This means that while we still must exercise a great deal of fiscal restraint, we are in a solid position to grow our economy through some targeted tax relief and while making investments in priorities like education and transportation. While the 2017 session (the “budget year”) is still a ways off, I look forward to hearing your ideas about the best approach to what will hopefully be another budget surplus.

International Festival of Burnsville

This Saturday, July 16 is the 2016 International Festival of Burnsville. This is an exceptionally fun event featuring food, vendors, and live entertainment such as dancers, musicians, and other entertainers displaying our city’s great diversity. The event goes from 3:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Nicollet Commons Park (12550 Nicollet Ave, Burnsville). For more information, please visit the Festival’s website.

As always, I hope you will stay in touch with any feedback you may have, or if I can ever be of assistance. It’s an honor to be your voice in St. Paul.

Sincerely,

Sandy Masin

State Representative
