Legislative Update- June 8, 2016

Wednesday, June 8, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

Tomorrow at 6:30 p.m., Senator Carlson and I will hold a town hall meeting in Burnsville at the Metcalf Junior High School Cafeteria, located at 2250 Diffley Rd, Burnsville, MN 55337.  I hope you can make it and that you will bring your questions and concerns.

Special Session Update

The Governor recently “pocket-vetoed” the tax bill, which means he did not sign the bill in the time frame constitutionally mandated to act on bills passed by the Legislature.   This was because there was an error resulting in $101 million dollar revenue loss.  There is still an opportunity to act on the bill, however a special session is necessary to correct the mistake.

Constitutionally, only the Governor can call a special session.  To do so, Governor Dayton has requested a reconciled, long-term transportation agreement in writing among House and Senate leaders.  Additionally, he has requested additional funding for more capital improvement projects to ensure statewide balance and fairness to the list of crumbling infrastructure in need of repair.  These requests are by no means requirements for a special session; Dayton has indicated he is willing to compromise and has invited legislative leaders to meet next Wednesday to continue negotiations.

I’ll keep you updated on any progress we make.

Sincerely,

Sandy Masin
