Legislative Update - September 29, 2021

Wednesday, September 29, 2021

Dear neighbors,

I hope you’ve been able to enjoy the great weather we’ve had recently! The first few weeks of fall are a good time to get outdoors and visit all of the places our community and state have to offer.

MNDOT Addresses Issues with Lafayette Bridge

Over the past six years, crashes on the northbound side of the Lafayette Bridge – which connects St. Paul to the southeastern suburbs – have increased significantly. In response, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) is going to install a message board that will help drivers pick the right lane, preventing confusion and car accidents. The Star Tribune and Pioneer Press both published articles about this development. You can read them here and here.

Pfizer Booster Shots Available for Eligible Minnesotans

According to the latest guidance from the CDC, people are eligible to get a booster shot if they received the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at least six months ago and:

There are plenty of ways to get the booster shot if you’re eligible. Free vaccines are available at pharmacies, health care providers, community clinics, and more. You can use the state’s Vaccine Locator Map to find a provider near you. Booster shots aren’t yet authorized for people who received the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Inflow and Infiltration Grants Awarded

In 2020, legislators invested $5 million in the Inflow and Infiltration (I/I) Grant Program. 61 communities applied for and received an I/I grant, including South St. Paul, West St. Paul, and Mendota Heights. The communities will use these funds to reduce the amount of excess stormwater and groundwater that enters their sewer pipes. This helps prevent flooding and preserve water quality.

House High School Page Program

The Minnesota House of Representatives is accepting applications for the High School Page Program. Juniors who are selected for the week-long program will have a chance to meet with elected officials, participate in the legislative process, and discuss issues they care about. They will receive a small stipend, and the cost of lodging is covered.

Students can learn more about the High School Page Program and apply online. Applications are due on Tuesday, November 23.

Upcoming Events and Activities

On the Road Again
