Legislative Update - July 2, 2019

Tuesday, July 02, 2019

Dear neighbors,

Happy Fourth of July! I hope you have a safe and enjoyable holiday with family, friends, and neighbors.

We owe a great deal to those who’ve fought for our country and those who’ve fought to improve it. The Fourth of July reminds us to thank our service members, veterans, and their families and those who continue working hard to ensure that everyone has access to the freedoms, rights, and opportunities that we cherish.

Minnesotans also remember the brave soldiers who fought in the battle of Gettysburg, which took place on July 1-3, 1863. Members of the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment displayed extraordinary heroism on the second day of the battle. You can read more about the First Minnesota here.

Fort Snelling Independence Day Celebration

Historic Fort Snelling is hosting an Independence Day celebration that explores the history of freedom in America. There will be learning stations, fife and drum music, military dress parades, cannon and musket salutes, and other activities. You can find more information and purchase tickets here.

I had a great meeting with Congresswoman Angie Craig this morning.

Mendota Day

The Mendota Day parade will begin at noon on Saturday, July 13. The route starts at St. Peter’s Church on Highway 13 and ends just after the VFW. After the parade, there’ll be activities, food, and music. More details about the event are available here.

Financial Assistance for Teachers

If you’re a teacher, you may be eligible to receive student loan repayment assistance. The Minnesota Teacher Shortage Student Loan Repayment Program provides grants to teachers who work in Minnesota communities with teacher shortages. Applications will be accepted through July 15.  More information is available here.

On Saturday, I participated in the Kaposia Days Labor Against Cancer Run-Walk.

Please continue to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Rick Hansen
State Representative
