Legislative Update - February 8, 2019

Friday, February 8, 2019

Dear neighbors,

Experts from the University of Minnesota testified about the dangers posed by chronic wasting disease yesterday. Michael Osterholm, the director of the U of M’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, raised the possibility that the fatal neurological disease could someday spread to humans. He and other scientists argue that the outbreak of CWD should be treated as a serious public health issue.

Please watch the presentation here. More information about CWD is available on the Environment and Natural Resources Finance Committee website.

I brought in the scraps, bone, and hide of a deer taken (by me) during the landowner permit hunt in Fillmore County to demonstrate what we’re talking about with carcass management. There’s a lot left over after a deer is processed.

The Pioneer Press wrote about the concerns raised by the public hearing. Read “Experts: Yes, chronic wasting disease in deer is a public health issue—for people” here.

Sincerely,

Rick Hansen
State Representative
