Statement: Hansen, in bipartisan manner, switches to support Sunday sales

Monday, February 20, 2017

SAINT PAUL, MN—Today, the Minnesota House passed a bill that would end the prohibition on Sunday liquor sales. The bill allows for limited hours of off-sale liquor sales between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and prohibits liquor deliveries. It was passed with a bipartisan vote with 85 ayes and 45 nays.

Rep. Rick Hansen (DFL-South Saint Paul) released the following statement:

“I’ve always voted against Sunday off-sale liquor sales. This year was different not just because of the overwhelming change in sentiment we’ve seen over the years, but because we’re working to dedicate revenue from the sale of alcohol to treatment programs. With this bipartisan effort, I’m happy Rep. Loon and I were able to discuss the importance of treatment programs during the debate and committed to working together on HF 1091 to dedicate additional tax revenue from Sunday off-sale alcohol sales to these important treatment programs.”

Rep. Rick Hansen (DFL-South Saint Paul) is the DFL-Lead on the House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources Policy and Finance. Rep. Hansen has authored nation leading legislation on pollinator and environmental protections.
