Bipartisan Landfill Cleanup Bill is Approved in the House

Monday, May 16, 2016

Saint Paul, Minn.- Tonight, on a bipartisan vote, the Minnesota House passed HF 2841, a bill that would provide additional investments to the Metropolitan Landfill Contingency Action Trust. The MLCAT is a fund used for necessary, reasonable and post-closure care at mixed municipal solid waste disposal facilities within the metro. Rep. Rick Hansen (DFL-South Saint Paul) coauthored the legislation and released the following statement:

“Historically, Republicans have raided the funds from this account to pay for other special interest priorities. As we near the end of the legislative session, I’m hopeful we can get this long overdue, common sense bill signed into law.”

MLCAT’s revenue is collected at the rate of 25% of the $2 per cubic yard within each landfill, or 25% of the $6.66 per ton of mixed municipal solid waste. These fees generate about $800,000 per year.
