Minnesota House Unveils Bonding Bill, Funding for Shooting Star Trail Included

Tuesday, April 1, 2014

ST. PAUL, MN – Today the Minnesota House of Representatives unveiled capital investment legislation (more commonly known as the bonding bill) that will create good jobs, spark economic development and improve Minnesota’s infrastructure.

This year’s proposal includes $850 million in bonds and $125 million in one-time cash from Minnesota’s budget surplus.

State Representative Jeanne Poppe (DFL – Austin) said she is pleased the bill includes $2.5 million to acquire land and develop 11 miles of the Shooting Star Trail from Rose Creek to Austin.

“Expanding the Shooting Star Trail will help draw more tourists to southeastern Minnesota and allow more families and individuals to experience our region’s beautiful landscape and wildlife,” said Poppe.

The House bonding bill will finance statewide infrastructure projects in higher education, transportation, housing, economic development, water quality and wastewater treatment. Poppe says those kinds of investments will fuel Minnesota’s positive economic momentum right now and into the future.

“Minnesota’s economy is on the right track, but we need to make sure more individuals, families and businesses are sharing in the benefits of our recovery,” said Poppe. “Passing a strong bonding bill will put people back to work and build on our momentum.”

After the House and Senate vote on their respective bonding bills, a conference committee of members from both chambers will iron out differences before a final bill can be sent to Governor Dayton to be signed into law.
