Update from the Legislature 1/9

Monday, January 9, 2023

Dear Neighbors,

The legislative session started only a week ago, and we got right to work fulfilling our promises to improve Minnesota. Reproductive freedom, affordable child care, improved education, paid family leave and sick time and infrastructure funding are just a few of our priorities this session. You can watch House and Senate leadership discuss our shared priorities here.

Again this year I have the honor to chair the Health Finance and Policy Committee in the Minnesota House. I will continue working to make healthcare more affordable and accessible through measures such as reducing out of pocket costs for patients, making prescription drugs more affordable, strengthening our health care workforce, and working to ensure that we have health care facilities where they are needed. The MinnesotaCare Buy-In was introduced again last week. We will be considering this proposal among many to see how Minnesota can make sure that every Minnesota gets the high quality health care  they need and deserve.

In our very first hearing this week my committee passed the Protect Reproductive Options Act (PRO Act) to ensure every Minnesotan is free to make their own reproductive health care decisions. Soon we will take up the companion to the PRO Act, which repeals unconstitutional, outdated, and burdensome laws that deny reproductive freedom and autonomy.

DFL Priorities

Here are a couple other major issues that the House DFL majority as taken action on:

  • The Taxes Committee passed a bill for federal tax conformity which will reduce taxes on Minnesotans across the state while simplifying the filing process.
  • We announced our joint House and Senate plan for full legalization of adult-use cannabis. This bill will have many committee stops where all aspects of the proposal will be examined.

This is just the beginning of what should be an eventful session, I’ll be sure to keep you informed of future developments.
