The Health Policy and Finance Committee approved a proposal this morning that would bring a new North Memorial Hospital to Maple Grove.
Rep. Melissa Hortman (DFL-Brooklyn Park/Coon Rapids), coauthor of the bill, supports this new hospital and has worked vigorously in support of North Memorial's efforts.
"North Memorial has served the north metro area well, and could be substantially harmed if another hospital moves into Maple Grove," said Hortman.
Hortman also cited the close proximity between North Memorial in Robbinsdale and a new North Memorial in Maple Grove as an efficient way to invest in new facilities. "One significant cost driver in health care comes from recovering huge capital expenses invested in expensive machines like CT scanners and MRIs," said Hortman.
North Memorial's top notch emergency transportation department is another benefit, according to Hortman. "Their emergency transportation department has been working with other local, state and federal agencies," said Hortman. "They are prepared to be our first responders in case of any complex natural or man-made disaster."
Finally, North Memorial's leadership has assured Hortman that they will work closely with area community and technical colleges to insure that adequate clinical training opportunities will be provided for area nursing students and other students choosing clinical health care careers.
It is unclear at this time what action the Senate will take on their version of this bill, or what the vote on the House floor will be. For now, though, a first big hurdle has been overcome.
"This is very good news for our area," said Hortman. "I will continue to advocate for the addition of this excellent medical facility to our community."
