Assistant Majority Leader Melissa Hortman issued the following statement in response to the passage of the Renewable Energy Standard.
"I am absolutely thrilled to see this bill pass. Two years ago, we weren't even able to talk about renewable energy on the floor of the Minnesota House. Now, we are very close to adopting a standard that will make Minnesota the nation's leader in renewable energy. This bill will help address some of the most serious problems facing our state and country, from global warming to our dependence on fossil fuels.
"There is still, however, much more work to be done on this issue. Reducing emissions from electrical generation is just one piece of the puzzle. To further address the challenge of global climate change, I encourage my colleagues to join me and pass legislation reducing greenhouse gas emissions generated by transportation sources. These emissions account for one-third of the emissions in Minnesota. Moving on to the area of transportation is a logical next step as we work to rein in greenhouse gas emissions."
