LEGISLATIVE UPDATE FROM REP. ROD HAMILTON

Tuesday, July 14, 2020

Good morning,

Due to the Governor extending his emergency powers for another 30 days, lawmakers were called back into another special session on July 13. Under state law, the governor must call the legislature into session when emergency powers are extended so the legislature can have its say on the extension.

Unfortunately the House majority had enough votes to not even allow a vote n extending the Governor’s emergency powers. This means they will continue for another 30 days.

BACK TO SCHOOL?

What are your thoughts on bringing kids back to school this fall?

Governor Walz and the Minnesota Department of Education have directed schools to make plans for three separate scenarios: students head back to school five days a week, students resume distance learning five days a week, or a hybrid model that combines online learning and in-person classes.

The Minnesota Department of Education recently offered a survey for parents to share their thoughts. It found that 64% of respondents would feel comfortable sending their student(s) back to school this fall. Of those 64% who said they’d be comfortable sending their student(s) back to school this fall, 94% would send their student(s) back to school full time. Less than 12% of respondents said they would not feel comfortable sending their student(s) back to school.

Its my opinion that individual school districts should be making decisions on how to safely reopen, as they are in constant consultation with their staff and parents. July 27 is the day we will learn how the governor wants schools are moving forward. Stay tuned.

WE'LL TALK AGAIN IN NOVEMBER

As this is an election year, legislative updates such as these must end 60 days after our regular legislative session adjourns. Even though we remain in special session, we have reached that 60 day deadline, so this will be my final email update until after Election Day.

That said, please know that I continue to represent you and want to hear from you about any legislative topic. I can be reached at rep.rod.hamilton@house.mn or by phone at 651-296-5373. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Stay healthy.
