RELEASE: Garofalo to propose new law to increase punishments for interference with emergency medical personnel

Tuesday, December 8, 2015

ST PAUL, MN—State Representative Pat Garofalo, R-Farmington, announced plans Tuesday to introduce the "Public Safety Personnel Protection Act" during the next legislative session. This legislation will enhance criminal penalties for those that interfere with public safety personnel who are trying to render medical assistance.

"Emergency responders should not have to fear for their safety when responding to a medical emergency," Garofalo said. "Everyone knows that when police officers, firefighters or paramedics arrive at a medical emergency, their number one priority is to render medical aid. The last thing these public servants should have to worry about is someone impeding medical treatment. Under this proposal, there will be zero tolerance for jeopardizing public safety. Zero. "

The 2016 legislative session will begin on March 08, 2016.
