ST. PAUL –A recently launched Web site provides information that could help people throughout Minnesota find affordable medicine. Many citizens unknowingly qualify for prescription drug assistance and the new AWARxE site is part of a campaign to heighten awareness. A number of pharmaceutical companies have programs that can reduce the cost of medications. Simply log on to and click on “Affording Your Medications” at the lower-left part of your screen. Links to several providers will appear. “A lot of these assistance programs have flown under the radar,” Rep. Dean Urdahl, R-Grove City said. “It’s certainly worth taking a look to see if you are able to benefit from assistance that can reduce the costs your prescriptions.” The new site also includes information pertaining to other areas of medicine, including the illicit sale of drugs via the Internet. According to the Web site, “AWARxE was founded by the Minnesota Pharmacists Foundation believing pharmacists have a critical role in providing medication safety information and helping raise awareness of the dangers of abusing medications. “AWARxE was inspired by the death of St. Cloud, MN resident Justin Pearson. Justin passed away on Christmas Day, 2006 from an overdose of prescription drugs - which he ordered online and obtained from pharmacies around the country, including at least one in Minnesota.” If your medications are too expensive, first seek the advice of your local pharmacist who can work with you and your doctor to help find affordable solutions. If you do choose to use online pharmacies, the AWARxE site “recommends that you use a VIPPS accredited pharmacy which has gone through a rigorous check to verify the safety and validity of its procedures.”
