Dear Letter to Editor,
The 2008 legislative session began at an unusually quick pace this year, and the result has been several responsive accomplishments that address our state's most pressing issues.
The comprehensive transportation package we passed means congestion relief and improved roads and bridges safety is on the way, including a plan to finally address Devil's Triangle. Our most significant transportation investment in the last twenty years came at a critical time. Just this week, MnDOT released a new report saying that traffic congestion has increased for the first time in several years.
Recognizing our current economic slowdown, we made early passage of a job-focused Capital Investment bill a top priority. Our balanced bill will spark both short and long-term economic development. It creates 10,000 good paying jobs and focuses significant attention on higher education projects at schools like Hennepin Technical and North Hennepin Community College.
We also took quick action on a tax conformity bill that provides millions of dollars in tax relief to Minnesotans. In addition, we passed the I-35W Bridge Collapse Survivors Compensation Fund to address the diverse needs of those affected by the I-35W bridge tragedy.
This session we have set the right priorities and followed through with meaningful results that will create jobs, boost our economy, and smartly invest in the long-term development of Minnesota. In the coming weeks, we must continue taking responsible actions to address several issues, including our current budget deficit. Given our progress thus far, I believe we are up to the challenge.
State Representative, District 46A
